After over 25 years in the retail and wholesale fashion industries I feel eminently qualified to help your business succeed. I always operated from the premise that people were the most important components of the industry whether sales staff or buying public. Striving to treat others as I would like to be treated therefore became my mantra. So using the Golden Rule to give superior customer service is a natural concept. Whether manager-to-staff or staff-to-customer, guidelines such as courtesy, empathy, recognition and commitment create good relationships. Building relationships builds loyalty. Without customer loyalty there is no business. Retailing is an art. I call it being "a peddler with panache." Becoming a great merchant certainly involves strong buying, shrewd bookkeeping and smart advertising. You must also define your store's image and stick to it with ingenious visual display and merchandising techniques. You must continue to communicate your intentions to both your target customer and your sales staff. On top of it all, as a manager or owner, you must continue to stay inspired. This is the knack of retailing. A professional image for the life of your career comes from investing in and building a professional wardrobe. You must dress for the job you want even more than for the job you have. The image you present to the business world can send a message of self-respect, determination and self-confidence, subconsciously putting the odds in your favor.
